Kungsgårdsskolan in Ängelholm has purchased burkinis for Muslim girls. This is because all students must show that they can swim to get an approved grade in sport. But the school’s decision to meet Islam’s values is not appreciated by all.

To be approved at the sport at Skånska Kungsgårdsskolan in Ängelholm, all students must demonstrate that they are able to swim.
But it has become a problem for the school’s population of Muslim girls, because according to Islam‘s rules they have to save their bodies for the boys therefore need to cover up.
The school then arrived at a solution: the option to purchase the burkinis for the students. A burkini is a comprehensive garment that concealed the girls’ bodies and allowed them to swim.
In another school in Skåne the issue went so far that the Muslim girls finished school with incomplete grades, due to the fact their parents forbid them from swimming in the usual school swimwear, a survey of SVT shows.
This is what Kungsgårdsskolan wanted to avoid.
“We met the girls’ parents who informed us of the burkini option. Then the problem was resolved that the girls could actually bathe with the class, “says school principal Teresa Torle.
But not everyone is happy with the decision.
Juno Blom, national coordinator to counter honor-related violence at the county council in Östergötland, says that it will be “problematic” when schools attend to such misplaced values. It sends completely wrong signals to society and plays the parents’ demands straight into their hands.
